Free Birds Q&A: Why did the chicken or pigeon dove come first?

Question by s7e7v7e7n7: Why did the chicken or pigeon dove come first?
I have a theory. After much observation and some contemplation. I can see how many would say. The chicken came first. I would have to give a reference point and so i will use , “free thinking and the free bird as examples to this theory. The un-caged bird walks the land, picking and choosing that which will satisfy it’s hunger and good health needs, unlike the caged bird who must eat what is given to them. A free thinker is much like the free bird picking up information for their personal education., and to some day lay out on paper or in words , the best theory which explains a question of the existence references for any named substance known . Thank You.

Does anyone know the name of this desert bird? It’s obviously orange, and lives in a desert climate. You can find him and a few like him in the Henry Doorly Zoo at the Desert Dome Exhibit.
He’s actually pretty small, somewhere between a sparrow and a large finch.

KCZooFan did know the name of the bird and pointed me in the right direction – check out his photostream here – www.flickr.com/photos/nvarvel/

Finch Bird Feeders Q&A: How to tag a bird to identify?

Question by marcia r: How to tag a bird to identify?
We found a baby sparrow and are taking care of him and want to gradually essimulate him back into his habitat but would like to see if he sticks around as we have a bird feeder in our yard. Is there any suggestions from anyone on how to mark him so we could know its him?

Best answer:

Answer by eskimo
You shouldn’t take care of him. The sooner you put it back in its nest, the better. If you mark it, it’s mother might not take it back. think about it.

Why do birds so often look inquisitive? There must be something about the beak and the wide-set unblinking eyes that does that to us. Maybe it’s the angle of the head.

Cockatiel Birds Why is my cockatiel afraid of a ball? How can i get him to play with it (how can i teach him to not be afraid)?

Question by Pare Tare: Why is my cockatiel afraid of a ball? How can i get him to play with it (how can i teach him to not be afraid)?
I have a cockatiel bird, and once i’ve gotten an idea of testing his reaction to playing with a ball. He didn’t like it, he despises it. Every-time he gets in contact to it he starts “hissing”. How can i teach him not to be afraid of a ball and start playing with it? Answers are really appreciated! :)
(remember he hates seeing balls in his sight)

Best answer:

Answer by Billy
pull up your pants! you are sick! jk jk he thinks it can hurt him lol he may see it as a threat, therefore tries to get away from it. keep it in his cage so he gets used to it.

Birds For Sale I have a 12 pounds of bird seed sealed in their plastic bags.Do I have to refridgerate them?

Question by Guy: I have a 12 pounds of bird seed sealed in their plastic bags.Do I have to refridgerate them?
I bought a lot of bird food on sale. Need it to last 3 or 4 months.
Thanks for all the great answers. In response to Vet tech, I feed the bird Kaytee Fiesta Cockatiel mix (http://www.kaytee.com/products/companion_birds/?pid=42641&aid=all&pcid=1)
Its one of the most expensive bird food products in the store. Is there something better? I buy it because it actually smells better than all the other seeds and my bird seems to eat it faster than anything I’ve ever given her.

Pigeons Is there an inexpensive non-harmful way to get rid of pigeons?

pigeons
by civilu

Question by elfyeaf: Is there an inexpensive non-harmful way to get rid of pigeons?
My mother and her neighbor have been inundated with pigeons! They’ve tried chicken wire AND a fake owl. Nothing seems to work! They just move to a different area of the roof and fly back and forth between the houses. Pest control is stating that it will be no less that 450 dollars to get rid of the pigeons. There are between 6-20 pigeons at any given time. Is there any safe way to be rid of them? There are many laws here prohibiting harm to wildlife. We tried calling the fish and game and regional wildlife reserve and we were told that we must have done something to attract them there. My mother and her neighbor have done absolutely nothing to attract these pests! They just showed up and seem to be attracting more and more pigeons! PLEASE help!

Best answer:

Answer by gardengallivant
Have the birds been able to get into the attic or into some other sheltered area for nesting. They like to roost in a covered location like lofts, steeples, vents, and under eaves. They shelter like this to avoid owls and falcons that hunt pigeons on wing from overhead. If you can find where they are roosting at night you can put wire mesh up blocking access until they leave. Or drape an area with bird netting whatever seems easiest to block the birds.
To get them off the roof is harder. If they nest elswhere but come in they must be foraging for food nearby. Try using Bird Proof to repel them. Meanwhile see if you can find where they are foraging for grain or seeds. Removing their food source will drive them away also.
